Madhup Mohta earned his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. After a brief period with the Paramilitary Forces, he joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1985. His diplomatic career includes postings in Hong Kong, Nepal, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. He has also held positions as Director of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations and Director of the Foreign Service Institute in New Delhi.

Mohta is proficient in Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Punjabi, German, French, and Chinese. A prolific writer in Hindi and English, he has edited several publications. His Hindi poetry collection, "Samay, Sapana aur Tum," won the Maithili Sharan Gupt Puruskar in 2003.
